Law Dog is a slang term for a lawyer. The phrase became more widely known after a Louisiana Supreme Court case, where police argued that a suspect asking for a “lawyer dog” could have meant an actual dog that was a lawyer, rather than a request for a lawyer. The judge held that the suspect’s request was “ambiguous and equivocal” so his interrogation could continue without the right to counsel.
